No matter how well you take care of your windows, they will eventually succumb to old age, wear and tear, and other unforeseen circumstances, and need to be replaced. When that time comes, you want to make sure that you do it right the first time and thats what Im here to talk to you about.
Steps to Window Replacement Success
1. Choose your contractor wisely. There are plenty of window contractors out there, but not all will be worth your money. Finding the right contractor to work with will require effort, but all the work that you will be doing will be well worth it to ensure your window replacement project will go off without a hitch. To help you screen companies, consider the following:
o Are they licensed, bonded and insured?
o Do they have a physical address?
o Can they provide you with multiple references from previous or existing customers as well as window manufacturers?
o Are they part of a trade organization?
o Do they have training certificates?
o Whats their Better Business Bureau rating? (For your reference, the highest BBB rating given is A+ while the lowest is an F.)
2. Make sure you really need replacement. Its not unusual for a window contractor to push for a replacement but youre going to want to work with someone honest enough to tell you what you truly need. If youre not sure that you need a replacement, dont hesitate to ask for a second opinion from another contractor. There are some window issues, after all, that can still be solved by minor repairs.
3. Pick out the right window type. There are so many options available to you that I can write a separate blog post about them. You have your contractor though and that means you have a professional working with you to find the right window type for your replacement. Windows are essentially functional but dont hesitate to pick a type based on what will look best on your home. To get you started, consider windows that complement the architectural style of your home. Dont forget to factor in energy-efficient features. Aside from helping lower your energy bill, energy-efficient windows can also contribute to improving indoor comfort in your home.
4.Maintain constant communication with your contractor. This means ensuring you are always kept in the loop regarding any developments with your window replacement project. Your contract is there to detail all that will go into replacing your windows but communication with your contractor is key. Often a project manager or other company liaison is assigned before the work begins to facilitate communication and address all your concerns before, during and after the replacement.
